CBI Warns Of Job Losses Unless Brexit Deal Concluded
The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has warned the government that if a transition deal over the terms of Brexit has not been reached by the end of March then they foresee that the majority of British businesses will start moving jobs across the Channel and will cut recruitment right down.
Transition Deal A Priority For Businesses
Around three quarters of the businesses have told the CBI that if a transition deal is agreed with the European Union by the end of March they would be prepared to put on hold any plans to cut jobs and move them abroad. The CBI president Paul Drechsler has been quoted as saying that the government need to make progress as quickly as possible to come to an agreement with the EU otherwise the result could be disastrous for the UK jobs market.
Speaking about the negotiations at the CBI Annual Conference in London, prime minister Theresa May said that progress was being made. Talking about the future of the economy and jobs market she said:
“By setting the right frameworks and investing in skills and infrastructure, we can help broaden our economic base, build a more balanced economy and make Britain a true global leader,”
“We cannot and will not try to make a plan for every corner of our economy. We believe in the free market and won’t attempt to shield the economy from market forces. We have to make strategic decisions about where the Government can and cannot best support key sectors of the economy.” (The above quote was taken from an article in The Telegraph).
The Clock Is Ticking On Brexit
It is now just 1 year and 142 days as we write this blog from when the UK leaves the European Union, maybe for good, so it is vital that this period is used to secure the best possible deal for the UK from the EU so that our economy and jobs market is secure and can grow.
